But the metrics we optimize for today will evolve, and so must our approach.\n\n## Beyond LCP and CLS\n\nLargest Contentful Paint and Cumulative Layout Shift are useful proxies for user experience, but they don't capture the full picture. A page can score perfectly on all Core Web Vitals and still feel sluggish if interactions are delayed or animations are janky.\n\n## The Interaction Problem\n\nInteraction to Next Paint (INP) is a step in the right direction, but it still measures symptoms rather than causes. The real question isn't 'how long did the interaction take?' but 'did the user perceive the interaction as instantaneous?'\n\n## Our Approach\n\nWe've developed internal tooling that measures perceived performance \u2014 the gap between when a user expects a response and when they receive one. This subjective metric drives our optimization decisions more than any Lighthouse score."}]
